Chapter 74 Response - Children of Blood and Bone

 Chapter 74 – Inan

Note: This time you have not been provided a quote from the story. This is an

explanation.

King Saran firmly believes in duty over self. Peace between maji and kosidán

failed in the past, so he does not want to try again.

Inan believes he must make a similar choice between his country and his

heart. He makes the same choice as his father, even though the majacite

sword blisters his own skin (this is symbolism). Inan gives up everything to be

everything his Father wants.

A message I take from this scene is Inan don't really know what to do because right after he betrayed Zelie, he saw them and hesitates a little to kill her.

Think back to what Zuko said about honour. Where does it come from?

Antarctic Centre - Recount

On Friday 4th of September, the 10 ESOL class went on a class trip at Antarctic Centre with Mrs Flores, Ms Briggs and Mrs Handley by a taxi van.

At first, we started school as usual. We went into our own form class and waited for period one to come. When the bell rang, period one started and that is when we went to the front of the learning commons to meet up. As we waited for everyone to come, we got to choose which car we wanted to ride on and all of us were already to go.

When we got to the Antarctic Center, we waited for a certain person to come who would help us with our class trip. Then she came, she introduced herself to us and her name is ‘Jane’. After introducing herself, she took us to the workshop. As we walked towards the workshop, I thought the Antarctic Centre was cold but it’s not. Then we reached the workshop, Miss Briggs handed us some bookwork to answer. Then Jane told us about Antarctic’s history. She talked for 40 minutes and I kinda feel bored and my back hurts because as she talks, we note things down without a table. She also asked us some questions about things that she’s talking about. Then she told us its time to move in the Hagglunds, it's whether we leave our bags there or bring it with us, but I left mine there cause I think its too troublesome to bring it.

After she talked, she took us outside and spoke a little bit about the ‘Hagglund’. Hagglund is a type of car that is often used in icy places. But the place we’re going isn’t ice, it's a muddy place. Before we rode the Hagglund, she told us that people with bones or spinal problems can’t ride it because the car moves too much. Then we went inside the Hagglund and put our belts on. I thought it was just gonna be a normal ride but when the car started moving, I didn’t expect that it would move like that, it’s too wiggly. I found it funny though because I don’t really get to ride things like that. Then, there’s this big cliff waiting for us to go down, the Hagglund’s driver made the car go faster and I never thought that Hagglund would be that fun. As we fell down the cliff, everyone was shouting and laughing because of the shock in our bodies. 10 minutes passed and the ride ended, we all want to do it again because it's fun and we don’t get to ride Hagglunds everyday.

Right after we’ve finished riding the Hagglunds, we waited for everyone to finish their ride too. Then, Jane told us that we’re going to the penguins next. I’ve never seen a penguin before so I was expecting to see a big penguin. When we arrived at the penguins, I couldn't see any and I was wondering why. All I see is water, then the keeper suddenly starts talking while feeding the penguins some fishes. The penguins are so small, they are called ‘little blue penguins’. They are the smallest types of penguins, but I’m not that disappointed that I didn’t get to see some big penguins like the emperor ones because they are kind of appealing. It’s cool how they’re small but still manage to eat a full fish in one go. While watching the penguins eating, the keeper told us that the oldest penguin they had in the Antarctic Centre was 25 years old but the penguin died. Now the oldest one they have there is 17 years old and taking care properly of them. She also told us that the penguins are often injured because boats accidentally hit them because they are small. While she’s saying that, I can see that some penguins have broken arms and legs, I feel pity for them because I don’t think they deserve to be injured. Then, while the keeper is talking, Jane suddenly picked us up and told us that we’re moving on to the next activity.

The next activity is the 4D movie. Its only 8 minutes long but the place really looks like a real cinema. Before we got to pick our own sits, Jane gave us some glasses to wear. I don’t know why we need to wear one but I think it will be fun. She told us that the movie is about a journey in the Antarctic. Then, the movie began, I never thought that they also have special things where wind and water goes to make the movie more realistic. The movie just started and it really looks real. The ice in the movie looks real, the water, the people, the ship, everything looks real, they move like what you really see in real life. Then some splash of water hits our faces, it was fun because they made you feel like you’re really in the Antarctic. While watching the movie, I removed my glasses and put it back, looking at the difference between with and without glasses. The movie sounds soothing because Antarctic looks so peaceful. After watching the movie, I kinda want to watch it again because it feels good like I never thought such a place exist.

When we got outside, she told us it's freetime. We got to do anything we want, but before that, she told us that there are also different people in the Antarctic Centre so she told us not to be careful. Also before our freetime, she told us to meet in the storm room because that’s the next activity that we will do. Then I went upstairs to get my lunch in my bag and went down again to the cafeteria to go where my other classmates are. Some bought food in the cafeteria and some have their own lunch. After we ate our lunch, we walked around the Antarctic Centre because we got nothing to do. We went back where the penguins are, and went to the places we’ve never been.

Our lunch ended and we all met in the storm room. Storm room is the only cold place in the Antarctic Centre. Before we went inside, there’s a water filled with ice where you can put your hands to test how long you’ll survive in Antarctic’s water. I put my hand inside, and it's not that cold because my body feels warm and the cold water feels nice in my hands. I remove my hand from the water because I don’t want it to be numb. Then before we go inside the storm room, she told us that we have to put some shoe covers because it's slippery inside. We all put some shoe covers and hastily went inside. It is cold there and I can see some ice in my feet. There’s also some iglo to help people hide and some unfunctioned car. Then, I saw a fan there where you can make the place colder, I pressed the button and the wind was so cold. It hit my face so hard and made my face numb fast, but I got used to it so it kinda feels refreshing. Then the lights are slowly darkening. I feel excited because I want to feel what Antarctic feels like. Then, the lights are totally off, it’s almost dark that it will really make you feel like you're in the Antarctic. Wind blows, everyone shouted, it feels like when I pressed the fan but this time, it hits your full body. Some people are hiding in the iglo because the wind is so strong. It’s cold but I’m glad that my clothes protected me and kept me warm. Some remove their jackets, I don’t why they did that though, maybe it's not cold enough for them? The wind remains strong, I hid in the iglo to make myself a little warm, but I realized that the wind is the one that is cold. After that, I went outside the iglo for fun. The cold is bearable though so I managed to stay outside the iglo. Minutes pass and the lights are turning back to normal, so the wind is too. It took several minutes for the lights to go back to normal. Storm room ended and we went outside and I felt hot because we’re in the cold then suddenly going to a warm place. Then Jane told us that the storm room is what it feels like summer in the Antarctic. I was shocked when I heard that because it’s cold and I wonder what winter feels like. Then the next activity started.

The exploration room is the last activity that we did. That is where we answer all the questions from the book that Ms. Briggs handed us. Some are working on their books and some are taking pictures. I rested there because the storm room made me tired.

It’s 1:00 pm and it's time to go back to school. I don’t want to go to school at that time yet, I still want to ride the Hagglund again and go to the storm room. The vans are waiting for us outside and that’s when our school trip to the Antarctic Centre ends.

Chapter 66 Response - Children of Blood and Bone

 Chapter 66 – Inan

Father stands in his night robes, scanning a faded map. No sign of hatred. Not

even a hint of disgust.

For him, carving MAGGOT into a girl’s back is just another day’s work.

In that instant it hits me: Zulaikha’s death. Zélie’s screams. They don’t mean a

thing to him. Because they’re maji, they’re nothing.

A message I take from this scene is that Inan don't really want to hurt Zelie and the other maji, he just follow what his father wants in order to save Zelie.

Think about how the word ‘maggot’ is used. This is a slur. Do we have these in real life? - yes

Rube Goldberg Machines

For science, we have to create a Rube Goldberg Machines, then we have to connect it with another machines. I created one by using legos only.

Chapter 59 Response - Children of Blood and Bone

 Chapter 59 – Zélie

“How will me coming back to Lagos solve any of that?” I ask. “As we speak,

your father calls for my head!”

“My father’s scared.” Inan shakes his head. “He’s misguided, but his fear is

justified. All the monarchy’s ever seen is the destruction maji can bring.

They’ve never experienced anything like this.” He gestures to the camp, face

alight with so much hope his smile practically glows in the darkness. “Zulaikha

created this in one moon, and there are already more diviners in Lagos than

anywhere else in Orïsha. Just imagine what we could accomplish with the

resources of the monarchy behind us.”

A message I take from this scene is Inan is trying to convince Zelie to go back to Lagos with him, to also prove Inan's changes because of Zelie.

Art Stencils

For art, we have to make some stencils. I chose to create a stencil about Franky from One piece. I did Franky for my work because I think it would be kind of nice to do him. I chose light blue for the background because that color best describes his personality. For the stars above the painting, I added them because the drawing would look kinda empty so I decided to add some stars to make the painting more livelier but not in the whole drawing. And for the star in the middle, Franky have a star on his hand so I added a star there too. I didn't add that much detail to my drawing because I think it would be confusing. I also did a mistake to his legs, I accidentally cut the paper between his legs so it looks like a fish now. Lastly, for the color of his body, I painted yellow first for the line art then add red for the main color of the drawing, and ended up looking orange. For the main color, I chose red, blue and yellow because Franky looks like that

Chapter 56 Response - Children of Blood and Bone

 Chapter 56 – Zélie

We zip through the crowd while celebrants thrust and shimmy by our sides.

Though part of me wants to cry, I crane my neck to take in the crowd, craving

their joy, their life.

The children of Orïsha dance like there’s no tomorrow, each step praising the

gods. Their mouths glorify the rapture of liberation, their hearts sing the

Yoruba songs of freedom. My ears dance at the words of my language, words I

once thought I’d never hear outside my head. They seem to light up the air

with their delight.

It’s like the whole world can breathe again.

This could be compared to a group of people having fun in a feast. Everyone is happy because they are celebrating something special to them.

Technology and Change Essay

For our social studies, we're studying about different era's in our time. We have to choose three technologies in that era and research something about them. So we chose to study about the 20th century and create an essay about it.

Question: Explain a technology period you have studied and what some of the

important inventions were in this period.

Use the Lawyer paragraph to explain this.

Paragraph 1: Introduction.

Re-state what the question is in a paragraph

During the 20th Century period in history there were some significant technological advancements. Some

of the inventions during this time were plastic, television and internet. These inventions seen during this

time are still widely used and seen today.

Paragraph 2: Invention 1 explained

State what the invention is, what it does and how far it has come up until today

A Significant invention during the 20th Century was plastic. Plastic is widely used around the world. It

was first invented in 1907 by Leo Baekland. Plastic is useful to most people because it can be recycled or

reused. It can be used for eating, drinking, for buying things at the supermarket, packaging and anything

else. But despite plastic being useful, it has a huge disadvantage in the world. First of all, people are using

too much plastic which causes an excessive amount of waste. When plastic is made, it takes thousands

or millions of years before it wither. However, there are billions of plastic products now, it would be very

hard to decompose. This causes animals to suffer and cause a huge impact in the world like if it doesn't

decay now, this place will be full of plastics. Well, despite these things, we can still recycle plastic and

create more things that we can use over and over again. Therefore plastic is an important invention of this

time.

Paragraph 3: Invention 2 explained

State what the invention is, what it does and how far it has come up until today

A Significant invention during the 20th Century was television. Television is another significant technology

that was invented in the 20’s century. Television is used for entertainment, listening to news or anything

else. This invention has huge improvement as time goes on. First, its appearance differs in size as

technology improves. It originally looks like a small brown tv and a black and white screen. But between

1940’s and 50’s, colored television was invented. Then the screen follows next and becomes flat which

makes it easier for people to watch. Different programmes can now be watched there like cartoons, news

and other devices that can be connected in the tv. This is a very important technology because it makes

people's lives easier, like when watching news, you know what’s happening around you and you don’t

have to read newspapers anymore. But this television also has disadvantages, some people are addicted

to watching and if it overuse, it could break or sometimes it might explode. Well, this doesn’t happen very

often because not everyone is addicted and some people don’t have televisions. We can still say that

televisions are a significant invention that was invented in the 20th century because it helps us in many

different ways. Therefore television is an important invention of this time.

Paragraph 4: Invention 3 explained

State what the invention is, what it does and how far it has come up until today

A Significant invention during the 20th Century was the internet. The Internet was first invented by Robert

Kahn and Vint Cerf in 1960. This invention is very important and beneficial to everyone. Without the

internet, life would be a little hard because this invention is used in most things today like studying,

working, researching, entertainment and many other things. Almost everyone with a gadget or device

uses the internet. People use this for working on their job, for talking to their family, for studying or

anything else. This is still widely used and seen today as more things will be invented, the internet will

always be there to help. Therefore the internet is an important invention of this time.

Paragraph 5: Conclusion

Go over the points you have just made above

There were many significant technological advancement seen during the 20th Century. Some of those

discussed are plastics, televisions and the internet. These are all commonly seen today all over the world

and are still very important in today's generation.

Chapter 45 Responses - Children of Blood and Bone

 Chapter 45 – Inan

“Your people, your guards. They’re nothing more than killers, rapists and

thieves. The only difference between them and criminals is the uniforms they

wear.”

A message I take from this scene is that Inan's father is corrupted. He's also good outside but not inside.

“I won’t let your father get away with what he’s done. I won’t let your

ignorance silence my pain”

With that, she disappears. Her quiet footsteps fade into the silence.

In that moment I realize how wrong I’ve truly been.

It doesn’t matter if I’m in her head.

I’ll never understand her pain.

A message I take from this scene is that Inan is starting to understand Zelie's pain as he knows more about her.

Chapter 43 Responses - Children of Blood and Bone

CHAPTER 43

Now it takes everything to gain control. No matter how hard I fight, the risk of

feeling Zélie’s pain lingers. A constant and growing threat.

A message I take from this scene is that they can't stop Zelie's anger no matter what they do.

(Why is thinking about the truth a “threat”? - because it's dangerous)

Dogs of the Vastness - Another Adventure

We have been studying Antarctica. We listened to a story about Nanook, a

husky who was sent to Antarctica on an expedition in 1901. We then wrote the

next chapter of the story from Nanook’s ‘Point of View’.

So another adventure awaits us again. Our guardian told us that we’re going to Antarctica this time and I’m travelling with my friends again. This feeling, overwhelm, nervous, excited and many more indescribable feelings flowing inside my body. I can’t wait, so my friends too. Hector started singing his song again, maybe he’s eager to go too. Two days feels so long. I wonder how cold Antarctica is, maybe much colder than Lytellton? Well, who knows, I’ll just wait for the next two days and save my energy for the upcoming adventure. I imagine how much fun we will all have.
