Passion Project - Science

So today, I'm going to tell you what we did on Thursday.

Thursday:

So when Thursday, I have dissected a rat. The rat that I dissected is female and it's not been touched. I have dissected a rat last Monday but it is been touched by a student and she just put it back to the refrigerator to be thrown up. But that is only a practice. So, I have dissected a rat on Thursday and it's pretty fun and mysterious. We have found a letter 'A' at the caucem part of the rat. We have ask a teacher but they said that the rat has a cancer. I'm not actually sure what it is, and we also found a stone like in it's stomach. We just guess that it is a stone because it is pretty hard when we touched it. Dissecting a rat is pretty fun, the rat doesn't smell at all and I don't even know why. I hope I can dissect more animals because I want to see the different parts of their body.

Matter ( Solid Liquid Gas )

So for our today science, we are talking about matter.

What is Matter?
-  Matter is anything that occupy space and has mass.
-  There are 3 states of matter
    Solid
    Liquid
    Gas_____________________________________________________________________________

What is Solid?- Solid is made up of strong materials.
- Solid is not the same as liquid and gas.
- Solid sticks together to form a shape

Examples of Solid:
- Table
- Chair
- Pen
- Anything that can last long in your hands
_________________________________________________________________________________

What is Liquid?- Liquid is a fluid that conforms to the shape of it's container but retains as constant volume.
- Liquid is not the same as solid and gas.
- Liquid doesn't stick that much as solid but it's not the same as gas.

Examples of Liquid:
- Water
- Juice
- Rain
- Saliva
- Liquid soap
- Anything that you can touch but doesn't last long in your hands
_________________________________________________________________________________

What is Gas?- Gas are difficult to see, but you can see them by using a microscope.
- Gasses are widely separated from one another.

Examples of Gasses:
- Air
- Perfume
- Evaporation
- Helium
- Gasoline
- Anything that you can't see but you can feel it.

Water Bottle Rocket Experiment

Today in our science, we did a experiment that is called 'Water Bottle Rocket'.

This experiment is a rocket that is made up of water bottle, tape and some boxes. We're doing it for about 2 weeks, but we only have 2 days in a week that's why we didn't get it done earlier.

Materials needed:

-  1 Plastic Bottle
-  1 roll of tape
-  2 pieces of boxes
-  3 colour paper

Instructions:

-   You need a 1.5 litre bottle.
-   Cut some 3 pieces of wings made up of boxes.
-   Put a tape at the boxes so that it will stick properly.
-   Put a water in the bottle.
-   Put some air in the bottle with water by using a pump.
-   Wait for few seconds then your bottle will fly.

Tips:

-   Do not out too much water so that your bottle will fly high.
-   Don't cut your wings too big.

Making this experiment is a little bit hard because the box is hard to cut. Then, the wings doesn't stick too much in the bottle so you will spend a lot of time cutting the tapes.

Results of our experiment:

Science

Q1 a: Find out about St Johns Ambulance.

- St John New Zealand is a charitable organisation providing healthcare services to the New Zealand public. The organisation provides ambulance services throughout New Zealand, and also plays an increasing role in meeting the broader health needs of New Zealand communities through a number of health services and products.

Q1 b:  b. Write down 5 questions you could ask someone who is part of St Johns Ambulance.

- Why do this hospital is called 'St John Ambulance'?
- Is there any people that died in this hospital?
- Do this hospital have the best service?
- How was this hospital became known?
- Do this ambulance come on time when emergency?

Q2:  Interview the school nurse. Write a report about her job at Hornby High School.

- *She's not here yet*

Q3:  What causes sunburn in NZ to happen so quickly: How can it be prevented: what are the long term dangers of sunburn?

- There is an ozone hole over Antarctica which has grown so large it reaches southern parts of Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina and South Africa. Also New Zealand's Ozone layer is very thin so the sun takes a shorter time to burn us compared to other areas of the world.

- Sun burn can be prevented by avoiding sun exposure between 10am - 2pm, Wearing protective clothing and wide brimmed hats and by regularly applying sunscreen.

- The long-term effects of repeated bouts of sunburn include premature wrinkling and an increased risk of skin cancer.

Q4: Draw a simple diagram of the human heart, with arrows to show the direction of blood flow. Describe 3 things you can do to keep your heart healthy.

Science Experiment - Cracker

How many crackers can you eat in a minute?

Prediction :

Predict how many crackers can you eat in a minute.

I predict I can eat 8 crackers.

Rules :

1. You can only eat one cracker at a time.
2. You must swallow the previous one before you start the next one.
3. You cannot drink any water during the minute.

Result :

I ate 7 crackers in a minute.

Explanation :

It's hard to eat because the crackers stick's in your mouth and teeth and it melts quickly than what you expect.

Science Investigation - Lollies

My question:  Can we do this experiment without guessing it wrong?

My prediction: I predict that I will get some right and wrong answers.

How will you do this?

1. I will close my eyes.
2. Guess the flavour of the lolly.
3. See if I am right.

I will keep the same:                                                    I will change:
Brand of the lollies                                                        The testers

My answers:

Red - wrong
Yellow - right
White - wrong
Green - right
Purple - right
Orange -  wrong

Chicken Bone Experiment

What is bone made of?

A bone is made of collagen. Collagen is a protein that provides a soft framework, and calcium phosphate is a mineral that adds strength and hardens the framework.
Aim  To investigate the effect of acid on bone.

Method
  1. We collect chicken bones
  2. We’re weighing the bones.
  3. Then we put the bone in it’s own case.
  4. We put some acids in it. ( we use 3 glasses of syrups).
  5. We let it to say in it’s own cup.
  6. Open it, then weigh it.

Results

Bone in Water
Bone in Acid
Bone in Coca Cola
Observation
The bone floated in the water, then it travels around in the cup. Then we open it and it smells bad, lastly we weigh it to measure how much does it weigh.
The bone also floated a little bit and it stay in it’s own place. After waiting, we removed the bone in the cup, then test it before we weigh it.
I can’t see the bone in the cup because the coca-cola covered the whole glass. After 2 weeks, we open the cup then we removed the bone in the coca-cola and the bone change it’s colour into black.
Mass (g) Before
8 gm.
9 gm.
8 gm.
Mass (g) After
8.8 gm.
11 gm.
9 gm.
Difference in Mass
0.8 gm
2 gm.
1 gm.

Conclusion

I think if you put the bone in the acid, the acid will dissolve the calcium in the bone. It will bend the bone in any positone. Then, the bone in coca-cola will also bend because it also contain some acids in it.

Crime In a Circle House

Circle House Crime

                              Myka

Things happened before the crime …

In a Saturday at 2:30 in the afternoon, a crime happened in a Circle house.  A dead body was seen in the living room, his name is Paul ( 40 years old ) ( 189 cm tall ). Nobody notice the crime so no one knows the truth.

Crime Report …

A police investigated the living room with the dead body. A kitchen knife is one of the evidence saw in the crime, the knife is new and no fingerprint traced in there. There are some footprints on the mat, The floor is covered with mat so the blood sucked in the mat and it makes the police investigate harder. So the police kept investigating the house. They saw a comb in the drawer with some hairs. Little by little, the police can solve the crime, 4 suspects are involved in the crime. The maid, wife, gardener and the chef.

Suspects

  1. Maid ( Nicka ) - “ I was in the bedroom at noon cleaning the corner of the room. I am using my gloves that my boss gave to me because he is very sensitive “. ( 164 cm tall ) ( 38 years old ) ( Redish Hair ) ( Type A ).

     2. Wife ( Lany ) - “ We had a fight last night, but I love him so much. I didn’t
            come in his house today so I’m not the one who killed him! “ ( 39 years old ) (      . ( 176 cm tall ) ( Brown Hair ) ( Type B ).

     3. Gardener ( Lardo ) - “ I was in the garden, watering the plants at 12 noon              . and I went home. I am innocent “. ( 57 years old ) ( 158 cm tall ) ( White Hair)
            ( Type A.

     4. Chef ( Ryan ) - “ I was in a party last night, I was drunk so I sleep the whole                . day and I didn’t know that he was dead “. ( 43 years old ) ( 181 cm tall ) ( Brown Hair) ( Type C ).

Police ask each suspects …

  1. Police question - Where are you when the crime happened?
Maid - Yesterday I was taking a bath at 5 : 00 pm. I see Paul alive that time.stayed in the bedroom for the whole day.

     2. Police question - What time did you talked to your husband?
          Wife - I talked to him at 6 : 00 pm yesterday.

     3. Police question - What time did you go in the Circle House?
Gardener - I went there at 8 : 00 am in the morning. I didn’t enter that house .  . I started the work here.

     4. Police question - When is your last time that you went there?
Chef - I was there at 7 : 00 am yesterday because he had some visitors.

Crime Result …

The maid was the killer. Because she said “ I was in the bed room at the noon cleaning the corner of the room. I am using my gloves that my boss gave to me because he is very sensitive “. In the word CORNER the police immediately arrested the maid. That is not the only evidence, she is using gloves while she is cleaning so that no fingerprint will be trace, she uses her gloves while killing Paul and there are some comb in the drawer with some Red-ish Hair. They test each suspect blood, it is clear that the Maid is the killer.
