There is an ozone hole over Antarctica which has grown so large it reaches southern parts of Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina and South Africa. Also New Zealand's Ozone layer is very thin so the sun takes a shorter time to burn us compared to other areas of the world.

Sun burn can be prevented by avoiding sun exposure between 10am - 2pm, Wearing protective clothing and wide brimmed hats and by regularly applying sunscreen.

The long-term effects of repeated bouts of sunburn include premature wrinkling and an increased risk of skin cancer.
